We got up at 5:45 this morning and left early, from Najera and walked about 15 miles to Santo Domingo. Today we saw a German gentleman we met on the first day, and we saw our 4 Korean friends that arrived late at the hostel last night.
We passed a golf course on the way....the course looked great but it is in the middle of a ghost town. It looks like someone tried to make a resort town and then the economy crashed, but the course survived.

The town of Santo Domingo has several shrines and is known for a famous miracle. A father mother and son were passing through this town when it just became a pilgrimage, and a young girl asked the boy for a kiss. When he refused, she claimed he stole money. He was then tried by the local town’s people and as a sentence, hung to death. The mother and father of the boy went on their way to Santiago and prayed to St. James, on their return trip home they went to visit their son who was still hanging from the tree and he was alive. When they went to the town mayor, the mayor said he would only believe them if St. James made the Chicken that he was about to eat on his dining room table come alive....and the chicken became alive.....the son was released....the young girl was hung in his place.......and now, every church and mayors office has chicken coops with live chickens...kind of morbid.

Lesson of the day.
Walking through Spain, you must make some changes to survive.

Some simple ones:

  • Everything closes at 2 and will not reopen till 5.
  • Dinner is not served until 8pm.You must change your schedule or you will starve and you must eat if you are going to walk 20 miles a day.

How about the culture in your company, is it strong enough that it must change to survive? If not, than it isn't a strong enough culture. Because if I don't have to change, then I can act and behave the same as when I worked for your competition. The CEO’s number one job is to create and maintain a Culture....how would I describe yours if I walked in?
